How to assess progress in razor and sharps handling

Measure performance, not confidence alone

Sharps safety depends on controlled assembly, use, immediate disposal and a rehearsed response if an incident occurs. The goal is to remove improvisation from every moment a blade is exposed.

Confidence can rise or fall for many reasons. Progress evidence should show what the learner planned, performed and repeated under comparable conditions.

Foundation benchmark

At foundation level, the learner can set up safely, name the sequence and complete a controlled attempt with frequent trainer prompts. The essential checkpoints are:

• Prepare the approved disposal container before opening a blade.
• Keep fingers away from the cutting edge during assembly.
• Do not leave an exposed sharp unattended.
• Dispose of single-use blades immediately through the approved process.

Developing benchmark

A developing learner notices common problems earlier, including Carrying an exposed blade across the workspace.; Overfilling or poorly positioning the sharps container.; Trying to recap, bend or handle a used sharp unnecessarily.. They can pause, state the likely cause and choose a limited correction rather than waiting for rescue.

Rehearse the full load, simulated use, unload and disposal sequence with a safe training substitute until every hand position is predictable.

Consistency benchmark

Consistency means the result and process hold across more than one suitable model or scenario. Undertake sharp-tool work only with appropriate training and supervision, and follow incident procedures without delay.

• The disposal route is ready before the sharp is exposed.
• No exposed blade is placed on a surface.
• The incident response can be stated without hesitation.
