Hair texture assessment troubleshooting guide

1. Describe what you can observe

Texture assessment considers strand pattern, movement, shrinkage and response to tension before choosing a cutting approach. Start with what is visible, audible or repeatable—not a judgement such as “it looks bad”.

Use the intended outcome as the reference: The goal is to observe how the client’s hair behaves rather than applying one method to every texture.

2. Isolate the variable

Check the plan, setup and sequence before changing several things at once. The four most useful reference points for this topic are:

• Assess hair dry and in natural fall where possible.
• Observe curl or wave variation across different zones.
• Account for shrinkage before setting final length.
• Choose section size and tension appropriate to the behaviour.

3. Test the smallest correction

Common causes include Treating texture as uniform across the whole head.; Using high tension that disguises natural movement.; Refining the shape only in a stretched or wet state.. Choose the most likely one and test a limited correction where the result can still be controlled.

Compare dry, damp and gently stretched samples on training hair and record changes in length, direction and visible density.

4. Review and escalate when needed

Compare the result against these signals: Shrinkage is allowed for before the final cut.; Sectioning changes appropriately across textures.; The dry result retains intentional balance and movement.. If the evidence does not improve, stop repeating the same action and ask for another observation.

Handle hair and scalp gently, avoid excessive heat or tension and follow product directions.
