A practical lesson plan for hair sectioning

Set one observable lesson outcome

Sectioning turns a complex head shape into controlled working areas and makes guides easier to see and repeat. The goal is to create clean, purposeful sections that match the intended cutting pattern and hair behaviour.

Write the outcome as something a trainer can see or hear. Avoid goals such as “understand it better”; name the movement, decision, sequence or finished feature the learner should reproduce.

Demonstrate the decision as well as the action

The trainer should name what they are looking at, which option they choose and how they will know when to stop. The learner then repeats the decision before copying the movement.

• Choose section direction to support the planned shape.
• Keep partings clean enough to see the guide.
• Control section width so tension remains even.
• Re-wet or reset hair when the section stops behaving consistently.
