Set one observable lesson outcome

A haircut consultation translates broad preferences into an agreed plan for length, shape, finish and maintenance. The goal is shared understanding before cutting, including what will change, what will stay and what the hair can realistically do.

Write the outcome as something a trainer can see or hear. Avoid goals such as “understand it better”; name the movement, decision, sequence or finished feature the learner should reproduce.

Demonstrate the decision as well as the action

The trainer should name what they are looking at, which option they choose and how they will know when to stop. The learner then repeats the decision before copying the movement.

• Ask open questions before offering a solution.
• Clarify length with visible reference points rather than vague labels.
• Discuss styling habits and time available at home.
• Summarise the plan and obtain clear agreement.

Move from guided to independent practice

Begin with this controlled exercise: Run five-minute mock consultations from short scenario cards and have the observer repeat the plan they heard.

Close with evidence and a next action

Ask about relevant sensitivities and visible concerns, and do not diagnose conditions outside the barber’s scope. End the lesson by recording one success, one priority and the exact condition for the next attempt.
